"Apple Store Employee featured in NYT: I was earning $11.25 an hour. Part of me was thinking, ‘This is great. I’m an Apple fan, the store is doing really well.’ But when you look at the amount of money the company is making and then you look at your paycheck, it’s kind of tough."
— Jordan Golson, Apple Store employee • DIscussing his wages earned relative to the thriving success of his company, in a New York Times article today that’s definitely worth a read. The balance of jobs Apple has brought to the American economy have been weighed heavily towards retail, the sort of job for which many employees make around $25,000 per year, despite working for one of the world’s most profitable tech titans. As the article points out, Apple’s hourly rate for retail workers is above average among many competitors, but the products Apple sells add up to a much bigger profit per employee – the average Apple Store worker is responsible for moving $473,000 worth of products per year, yet many earn (based on that $25,000 figure) below 20% of what those sales bring in. Conversely, CEO Tim Cook’s 10-year vested stock grants? Today’s share price would fix them at $570 million. Which is, obviously, mondo money. (h/t Gregory Bufithis) source (via • follow)

Black, Beautiful and Framed

Dacia Carter 2012, Oil on Canvas.

From Aunt Jemima to hyper-sexualised video vixens, mainstream depictions of Black women are littered with stereotypes. An Economy of Grace, an exhibit running at the Sean Kelly Gallery in New York City, is artist Kehinde Wiley’s stunning effort to challenge similar misconceptions through the use of portraiture.
In all of the exhibit’s paintings, the models exude a vibrant and regal quality. There is none of the eclectic, afro-donning, power fist up, baby-tied-to-the-back-of-an-African-mother type of imagery that I’ve come to expect. No, the women featured in An Economy of Grace looked sassy and sophisticated. I could imagine myself meeting up with them to go shopping in SoHo or grabbing Sunday brunch together in our dolled-up glory.

Restauranteur in China Boasts 18 Robot Workers
A restaurant in Harbin, China staffs 18 robots; one to welcome customers as they arrive, others to cook the food, and more to deliver plates to tables. The owner says the robots, which cost between 200,000~300,000 yuan ($32,000~$48,000 USD), can display 10 different emotions and speak simple phrases.
The robot stops automatically if a customer gets in its way thanks to ultrasonic range sensors, and will sound an alarm if it needs to be repaired. And it knows to return to its power source when it gets low on juice (its batteries have a life of around 5 hours). Via futurescope.
